The Interstate / Children of Blue is two-sided compilation album of original music created for two documentary films by Jeff Mertz. Both films were made using a distinct, three-panel arrangement.

+The Interstate (vimeo.com/147185220) is a catalogue of a day in the life of an Interstate and the transient states of the people who inhabit it.

+Children of Blue (vimeo.com/jeffmertz/cob) is an experimental nature documentary that examines the lifestyles of three Icelandic shorebird species. Its original music is based on the Icelandic song "Ferðalok," or "journey's end" and is in three movements. Hunafloi, Vækilvík and Laxá are each built on a single harmonic progression of the song's verse, expanded proportionally to match the lengths of the film's three sections. The song itself is present only in Laxá, as a processed sample of a male choir singing one of its verses. The movements are named after bodies of water in the area of Skagastrond, Iceland.

The three movements were created to fit together as one piece of music when their speeds are adjusted such that they become equal in duration. Flæði (Icelandic for "flow") is the combined, three-into-one piece.
